CPR/FA take 5 minutes and read this, not even!
I am getting tired of hearing about people having someone choke and calling the police...happened today, Friday
http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?se...cal&id=6075258 They called the police when the boy choked on raisin bread and passed out. Luckily the police showed up in time and did abdominal thrusts aka Heimlich and saved the boy! Why are people calling 911 for choking there are signs everywhere on how to do this simple maneuver. So since I teach this stuff all over I thought I'd give a readers digest with links on how to do some basic stuff to save a friend, loved one or even a stranger. Choking. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...pages/1098.htm In both of these examples you are basicaly pushing/pulling the stomach under the the ribs... they are conscious... stand behind the person choking and make a fist with your hand you write with. Place your thumb knuckle in their navel/belly button. Your other hand goes on top of that hand. Then like a bear hug pull hard in and up. Unconscious...(they are lying down on their back) http://www.health.harvard.edu/fhg/fi...imlichAd.shtml place the palm of one hand on their navel the other hand on top and thrust upwards Infants/babies http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...ages/18155.htm hold the head with their back facing you hit the middle of their back with the palm of your hand CPR I'm just going to give a very basic info on this http://depts.washington.edu/learncpr/quickcpr.html But First issues people have 1) lawsuits...continue helping till relief, recovery or exhaustion and you are protected under the good Samaritan laws 2) Diseases - can be an issue, rare, but really hep, meningitis, tuberculosis's, mono...NOT AIDS or HIV 3) Doing it wrong or hurting the person... Can't be done....If you are NOT Breathing AND Don't have a pulse you are clinically DEAD!!! You cannot HURT THEM!!!!! We have clinical Death and Biological Death. CPR is to life support (machine in Hospital that keeps you alive) as a Bicycle is to a motorcycle, basically the same thing, just one is powered by a machine. ALSO a lot of people think CPR saves lives! THIS IS WRONG!!!! CPR guarantees that the person makes it to the hospital. IF they have a massive heart attack the best hospitals and top doctors cannot save them. New guidline say do 30 compressions...studies showed most people only last 5min doing thirty compressions and 911 is on average ten minutes to respond, we suggest using 1 breath and 5 compressions or by yourself if they are your height or taller do 2 breathes and 15 compressions. Basically there are three steps A -asses - check for breathing/pulse B - if not breathing - pinch nose and blow in their mouth like blowing up a balloon C - Compress/circulate - if no pulse find the top of the ribs and the bottom of the ribs and then take the palm of one hand and place in the middle of the chest - where the heart is...the palm/heel of the hand fits perfectly on the sternum. place other hand on top and press down. The trick to the depth....compress with one hand while the other is on their pulse point in the neck this way you know you are going deep enough. Text book says children about an inch and adults go 2 inches Infants http://depts.washington.edu/learncpr/infantcpr.html use the nipple line and use two fingers or if place your thumbs on their sternum, wrap your fingers around their back and squeeze them....like Charmin. When calling 911 tell them why you are calling and where are you...people mess these up all the time. When waiting for 911 make sure the victim is breathing, has a pulse, if not do CPR then check severe bleeding control bleeding with: 1) Direct pressure 2) indirect pressure( use palm/heal of hand above injury( do not use tourniquet) and place on the inner arm above wound or inner thigh above wound 3) Elevate the wound above the heart 4) use cold...ice ice water anything cold to constrict the blood vessels The treat for shock Lie the person down (if not already) elevate legs about a foot and cover with blanket, coats, jackets anything you might have to keep warm/ we treat for shock anytime we call 911. Doing these 4 things... Breathing Pulse Bleeding Shock called a primary survey will buy us about 2.5 hrs, by the way the longest someone has done CPR is 6 hrs....they were in the Canadian MTs hiking and she went down. He started CPR, a bit later some other hikers showed up and went for help, the helicopter showed up 6hrs later and yes she survived!!!! There is no time limit. P.S. I hope no one needs to use any of this!!!!! Also I have handouts from the class that if anyone wants I can send them to you...or I will post them on one of my websites and you can go there and download them.... |
